The Department of Physics at Texas State University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position beginning in the fall of 2023. Appointments may be at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor rank depending on qualifications. We are looking for an enthusiastic educator with research expertise augmenting our department’s strengths in the broad area of materials physics. Texas State University is a minority serving institution located in the Austin-San Antonio high-tech corridor. The successful candidate will have primary research interest in materials physics. This can be broadly applied to encompass “traditional” solid-state materials—electronic, optical, and magnetic such as semiconductors, oxides, and conductors—as well as materials of interest in device applications for biophysics, astrophysics, particle physics, etc. The new faculty member will be expected to establish an externally funded research program, mentor students, teach at multiple levels, and support innovative department teaching efforts including an emphasis on hands-on courses and the integration of teaching and research. A competitive start-up package will be provided.

The university has been classified as an Emerging Research University with research expenditures exceeding $72.5M in 2021. The College of Science and Engineering maintains state-of-the-art research facilities through the Shared Research Operations (sro.txst.edu). Facilities include a class-100/1000 cleanroom, extensive advanced characterization equipment, and molecular-beam epitaxy growth systems. The Department of Physics has vibrant bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. Required Qualifications

1. Ph.D. or equivalent in physics, materials science, or a closely related field.
2. Research expertise in materials physics area, broadly interpreted.
3. Ability to teach physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
4. A record of peer-reviewed publications.
5. A well-articulated plan to establish a research program and obtain external funding to sustain it.
6. Appointment to the associate professor rank also requires an established research publication record, an established competitively funded research program record or comparable industrial research background, and leadership accomplishments in academia or industry.
7. Appointment to the professor rank also requires an established extensive research publication record, an established extensive competitively funded research program record or comparable industrial research background, and major leadership accomplishments in academia or industry as well as the profession.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience beyond the Ph.D. such as postdoctoral researcher, time working in industry research and development, or as a faculty member.
2. Prior teaching experience.
3. Track record of effectively mentoring a diverse student body and other personnel (e.g., peers, colleagues).
4. Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
5. Research that complements and builds on existing department activities and leverages existing extensive facilities.
6. Record of research funding appropriate for the position level.
