Position Summary:
The Department of Physics, Geosciences, and Astronomy at Eastern Kentucky University seeks a qualified colleague at the assistant professor level to contribute to our BS Physics program, which includes concentrations in engineering physics, general physics, and physics teaching. We seek someone who will inspire and mentor students representing a broad range of classes, sexual orientations, gender identities, races, ethnicities, nationalities, and religions.
The successful candidate will teach an average of 12 hours per semester, include and engage undergraduate students in an active research program, and contribute to departmental service work. This is a tenure-track position beginning in August 7, 2023. Teaching duties may include a combination of core physics courses, physics and astronomy service and general education courses, pre-engineering courses, and upper-level electives. All introductory physics and astronomy courses at EKU are inquiry-based and taught in a studio-style classroom setting. We seek a colleague with academic training and practical experience that complements the department’s expertise and resources. Modest startup funds are available.
Department resources include a remotely operated observatory (with 17” CDK telescope), a laser lab (with tunable ultrafast titanium:sapphire laser, TEA N2 laser, Nd:YAG mJ nanosecond laser, interferometric precision stages, 10nm-resolution atomic force microscope, 18” interferometric TMC optical tables, etc), a nuclear/particle physics instrumentation lab (fast and open FPGA data acquisition systems, scintillation detectors and accessories, nuclear instrumentation modules, vacuum systems), hpc computing resources, ground-penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity tomography equipment, and the Hummel Planetarium used for teaching and research in astronomy education.
The successful applicant may have access to other College of STEM resources; current physics faculty members collaboratively use EKU Chemistry’s 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, SEM with EDS, UV-Vis spectrometer, FTIR-ATR spectrometer, AFM, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or closely related field at the time of appointment from an accredited institution and/or a recognized international university.
Desired Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated a commitment to undergraduate education and an ability to mentor students in research.
