Cornell University
Assistant Professor
The Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics (LASSP) at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level, to begin July 1, 2023. We encourage applications in any and all areas of experimental condensed matter physics or physics education research.
Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) biophysics, cold atoms and molecules, hard and soft condensed matter physics, materials, optics, quantum information and devices, statistical mechanics, x-ray physics, and physics education research. Candidates must hold a doctorate in an appropriate field. They must have demonstrated an ability to conduct outstanding research and show promise for future excellence in research and teaching within the physics department. They should be committed to enriching the diversity and excellence of Cornell’s academic community.
The Cornell University Department of Physics has more than 40 active professors, approximately 180 graduate students and 65 undergraduate majors. Research is administered under two laboratories: The Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics and the Laboratory for Elementary Particle Physics. We value interdisciplinary research and there are strong ties between the two laboratories and with the rest of Cornell, including the Department of Applied and Engineering Physics and the Department of Astronomy. The physics department plays an important role in the Kavli Center for Nanoscience, the Cornell Center for Material Research, and a number of the Provosts Radical Collaboration Initiatives. We boast access to cutting edge facilities including the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source and the Cornell Nanoscale Facility. Our faculty are located in the Physical Science complex (Clark Hall and the Physical Sciences Building) on the Ithaca campus of Cornell University.
Applications should be made at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22425 and must include:
- curriculum vitae
- publication list
- research statement
- teaching/mentoring statement, and
- a statement regarding equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
Candidates should also arrange for three letters of recommendation.
The research statement should include a summary of prior work and a proposal for future work. It should explain the importance of the candidate’s research, disambiguate their role in multi-author publications, and present both a short-term and long-term vision. The teaching/mentoring statement should give an account of prior teaching and mentoring experience and describe the candidate’s approach, philosophy, and ambitions. The EDI statement should describe the applicant’s past, present, and/or future aspirations for promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity in their careers as researchers and educators, and/or to convey how they see these commitments continuing at Cornell.
