University of California San Diego
Assistant Professor Data Science and Experimental Particle Physics (HDSI/Physics)
The University of California, San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Data Science and Experimental Particle Physics (primary appointment at the Halicioglu Data Science Institute with joint appointment in the Physics Department). The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. The successful appointee will have a track record of research accomplishments, teaching, and a commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion at the university.
Experimental particle physics presents a rich ground for making substantial advances in understanding the nature of physical reality seen through the algorithmic and data analytic lens of data science. This is because particle physics experiments produce large amounts of data from high-energy colliders and particle detectors. Acquiring and analyzing these data requires growing sophisticated analytical tools and systems from data science. Data science deals with the collection, annotation, exploration, and synthesis of high-dimensional, multimodal data, as well as the systems that allow such data to be efficiently processed, and theoretical foundations of data analysis. Particle physics instruments provide data science and AI/ML challenges ranging from real-time systems at the edge of the instruments to innovations in algorithms for raw data processing, filtering, and higher-level analysis.
The ideal candidate will have background preparation and training in Experimental Particle Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or foundation in Mathematics/Statistics. The candidate will bring strong connections between particle physics and data science with a strong research record advancing and deploying data science methods and tools for insights into particle physics. It is important for the researcher to go beyond using known methods and advances the field of Data Science and Particle Physics in collaboration with researchers in HDSI, Physics, and possibly Engineering and Mathematics. Candidates with significant systems interests are encouraged to apply.
The successful appointee(s) will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate students in Data Science and Physics, establish a vigorous program of high-quality, federally-funded research, contribute service to the university and profession.
