American Institutes for Research (AIR)

Physics Item Writers/Technical Reviewers for a High-Stakes Standardized Assessment

The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is contracted by a Confidential Client to develop the items and publish test forms for a high-stakes, nationally administered, assessment. Developing test items is a long process that involves our internal content editors, technical writers, technical and fairness reviewers, and test development reviewers before the items are available to be field tested and eventually become scored items. To support this process, AIR contracts with consultants to serve as writers and reviewers, who are typically faculty at colleges and universities.

Currently, we are recruiting new consultants to support both item writing and technical review. Item writing involves developing stimulus passages with dependent multiple-choice items, as well as sets of independent or discrete multiple-choice items. Technical review involves reviewing passage sets or sets of standalone items to ensure technical accuracy and clarity, as well as whether items have single, unique keys.

This is a flexible, online contractual position that can be scheduled around your availability and provides the opportunity to earn some extra money, build your item development skills, and focus on the measurement of introductory content knowledge.

Qualifications include:

  • PhD in Physics with a preferred focus on applications in life sciences
  • At least one year teaching at the introductory level with undergraduate populations with a preference for more years of experience

Once you submit your CV, finalists for the position will be contacted by email. The next stage of the application involves signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), and then submitting a writing sample based on instructions we will provide.

To apply, please submit your CV via email to itemwriters@air.org
