Two tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University invites applications for a two tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August, 2022. Please note both positions are based on enrollment and subject to available funding.
The Department seeks a candidate to fill a tenure-track position with a focus on astronomy. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related field. The department also offers a B.A. in Physics, a B.S. in Physics with concentrations in Automation and Instrumentation, Astronomy, Physics, Applied Physics, Secondary Education, and Interdisciplinary Science. The faculty includes 15.5 TT, 7 full-time NTT members, and 5 support staff. Both undergraduate and graduate programs are consistently ranked among the largest in the country by the AIP when compared to other Master’s granting institutions: enrollment exceeds 140 undergraduate majors and 28 master’s students. The department’s faculties include the Dark Sky Observatory (DSO), which hosts 32- and 18-inch telescopes with imaging and spectrographic capabilities as well three robotic photometric telescopes (6-, 14- and 17-inch). The Jo and Don Cline Visitor Center at DSO is used for public outreach. The department also houses an instructional observatory on campus with a 16-inch telescope capable of imaging and spectroscopy and the “GoTo” Astronomy Facility, a state-of-the-art astronomical laboratory with 15 Celestron CPC1100 telescopes used in our two-semester introductory astronomy course sequence.
In addition, the department houses research laboratories focused on nanoscale imaging and fabrication, applied electrostatics, laser optics, optical engineering and biophysical measurements, and ion storage. Additional facilities include the Appalachian Atmospheric Interdisciplinary Research Facilities (AppalAIR) as well as staffed machine and electronics shops.
