Associate Professor or higher

The Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Mary Washington invites applications for a new faculty position at the rank of associate professor, or higher, to provide leadership and direction to the physics program. Our ideal candidate will lead the faculty in developing an undergraduate program that features practices outlined by the AAPT-EP3 Guide. The start date is August 16th 2022. Tenure at the time of hire will be considered for candidates with the appropriate credentials and experience.


The department of 11 faculty consists of 8 chemists and 3 physicists. The physics program recently moved into a new building with ample lab space, and financial support for the program is provided by an endowed fund. Highly qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate a commitment to teaching and learning in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds. We especially seek candidates whose interests and experiences will help achieve the university’s goal to develop a diverse and inclusive curriculum that meets the needs of our changing student demographic.


Responsibilities:

  • Teaching two courses per semester, across the physics major and across the curriculum (ex. general education courses and first year seminars)
  • Maintain an active scholarly research program involving undergraduate students; play an active mentoring role in student career development
  • Work collaboratively with existing faculty to restructure the current curriculum based on best practices as defined by the AAPT and current PER research. Our goal is a curriculum that is rigorous, inclusive, sustainable, and modern.
  • Develop pathways for our majors to graduate programs, government work, private industry, and education.
  • Coordinate with the department chair on programmatic decisions involving curriculum, admissions, alumni, relations, outreach, etc.
  • Continually support and mentor faculty through the promotion and tenure process

Requirements:

  • Earned the rank of Associate Professor or higher at a previous institution
  • Eight years of undergraduate-centered teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience serving in an administrative capacity, typically as a department chair or program director
  • Experience in teaching at a liberal arts and sciences institution
  • Experience in curricular reform
  • Experience mentoring junior faculty
  • Experience fostering an equitable and inclusive culture
